[Character Information]
Character’s Name: Gwendolyn
Series: Odin Sphere
Age: late teens
Gender: Female
Species: Valkyrie (considered human by the races in her game of origin)
Timeline: Right near the end of the third chapter, before she's put to sleep.
Is time travel canon for your character/series? If so, explain how.: No.
Are other dimensions canon for your character/series? If so, explain how.: No.
Appearance: Small frame, blue eyes, shoulder-length silver hair which she often covers in a bun. Wears what looks like a white sleeved tutu, which exposes her shoulders, along with armored legwear and a crown-like tiara which represents her rank. Has blue, purple-tipped wings, which look like part of her attire when not in use.
Personality:
When out of battle, Gwendolyn is usually soft-spoken, polite and attentive. She listens to others and may help them if so inclined. She is slow to befriend, but quick to help out when needed, as she likes to feel useful to those around her. Anyone who manages to get her to talk about her world at length may quickly find out she has an abnormally high opinion of her father, and takes any criticism or attacks on him harshly.
Incidentally, the Valkyries in her world, once they lose the ability to fight, get married off in order to produce the next generation of warriors and find their standing greatly reduced. As a result, Gwendolyn has a rather low opinion of marriage as an institution.
Abilities/Weapons: Her wings grant her limited flight. She has the standard warrior's training of a valkyrie, which centers around swift strikes and evasive maneuvers. Her spear, a gift from her late sister, has a jewel called a Psypher at its tip, which absorbs the life force (Phozons) of fallen foes and can be released in the form of magic spells. She uses a buckler for guarding.
Weaknesses: The name of the game with Gwendolyn is daddy issues: she always felt overshadowed in her father's regard, either by her sisters or by the war campaigns, and had endeavoured to become a magnificent valkyrie to please him. As far as she's concerned, Daddy Can Do No Wrong. On a similar note, since she believes the whole "time-stranded" thing is some sort of punishment from her father, she won't be easily inclined towards finding a way back.
Applied limitations:
When Gwendolyn starts the game, she will find herself without her Psypher spear and with rather stiff wings (meaning she can't fly). All she will have is her buckler to ward off attacks. Her skill remains, however, and once she receives a spear she may be able to earn her keep hunting the local game.
In time, she may regain use of her wings, first for gliding, and later still for limited flight. As for her Psypher, it might be elsewhere in the era of her arrival or in another era entirely, but it will be drained of all its Phozons, leaving her with the task of regaining its spells while braving her way through time.
History:
Gwendolyn is the youngest daughter of Odin, king of Ragnanival and leader of the Aesir, who have been in various campaigns for years in preparation of the foretold end of the world. For most of her life, her older sister, Griselda, had led the Valkyrie division of the Aesir, until she met her end in battle against the Vanir led by Queen Elfaria of Ringford. Gwendolyn, upon receving her sister's Psypher spear, cuts a swathe through the Vanir, but is stopped by their Shadow Knight, who easily defeats her but chooses to spare her.
The following battle, this time with Odin's direct involvement, brought victory for the Aesir and the possession of the Vanir's greatest possession: the Cauldron, a gigantic furnace originally from the fallen nation of Valentine which can produce Psyphers in large quantities. However, no sooner does Odin approach the Cauldron that it goes silent. The culprit, a forest witch named Velvet, flees in the resulting confusion.
Later, upon learning of Velvet's recent spottings, General Brigan, Odin's second in command, goes after her. Distrusting his vassal, Odin sends Gwendolyn in his stead, who successfully confronts the witch. Velvet refuses to reactivate the Cauldron, claiming it's one of the five disasters foretold in the prophecies, but Gwendolyn is having none of that. Their fight is cut off by Odin's arrival, who tries to persuade Velvet by playing on their familial relations (as Velvet is Odin's illegitimate daughter with a Valentinian princess, but at that point Brigan appears and captures Velvet, promising to keep his king's indiscretions quiet.
Watching her father grieve as Velvet is sent to be sacrificed to the dragon holding the ring which controls the Cauldron, Gwendolyn decides to risk everything to save her half-sister. She succeeds, and even foils a plan Brigan was hatching to usurp the throne while she's at it, but as said plan hinged on the people learning of Velvet and Odin's relationship, as far as everyone is concerned she killed a renowned general to free an enemy of the Aesir.
At the time she gets sent to the game, Gwendolyn awaits her punishment, her sole comfort being that she may have finally made her father happy.
